SOSNA-Starbright Overlook South Neighborhood Association
Starbright Overlook South while an educational and industrial hub on the forefront of the growth of San Antonio’s Southside also has a rich past with Native American history and connections to the San Antonio missions and Spanish and Mexican‐era land grants. Starbright area residential communities include The Preserve at Medina, Mission Del Lago and Southstar’s VIDA, a multi‐phase development that includes new housing and recreational facilities. There is a new University Health Palo Alto campus that will include a hospital, pharmacy, and medical offices . Many of the other residential uses are spread throughout the area and are mostly rural in character.
Located at the gateway to Starbright South is Texas A&M University‐San Antonio, a public university serving over 6,500 students. There area has four major anchor employers, the Texas A&M University‐San Antonio campus, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas (TMMTX) plant, JCB-Texas and Navistar all of which are currently driving Starbright’s area growth.
Starbright South also benefits from unique natural features and the rural character of the area, such as the Medina River and the Leon Creek watersheds creating numerous recreational opportunities. One of these, Mitchell Lake Audubon Center ( click here), is a 1200-acre natural area and bird haven with wetlands, ponds and upland habitat. Another is The Land Heritage Institute, (https://www.landheritageinstitute.com/mission/) a former ranch, along the Medina River a living land museum promoting lifelong learning for students of all ages offering interactive experiences with historical, environmental and cultural landscapes.
